About Ms. Hattie

WoodsPic“Never, ever underestimate the importance of having fun.” -Randy Pausch

Ms. Hattie is my name, having fun is my game.

I am born and raised in Michigan’s mitten.   I attended public school all my life, and found a love for learning, pushing myself, and trying new things.  Public school is also where I found my love of education.  In kindergarten, I had a teacher that I thought hung the moon and I wanted to be just like her.  She set a really positive foundation for me, and my love of learning and going to school turned into a love of education.  I knew at the age of 5 that I wanted to be a teacher, and never turned back.  I truly cannot see myself doing anything else.

I went to Michigan State University (Go green!) and got a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.  After graduating, I decided to try something new and moved to Chicago for a year to teach 1st grade in Chicago Public Schools.  Although I loved the challenge, I realized that there really is no place like home, and moved back to Michigan.  I currently teach 2nd grade in the Novi Community School District.  My love of the Spartans and my love of learning has led me to work on my Master’s in Educational Technology at my second home, Michigan State University.  I could not be more excited to take what I learn from my courses and integrate it into my own classroom!

As a 2nd grade teacher, I strive to make my classroom a place that is full of laughter, positive words, and educational talk.  I want my students to love being in my classroom, just like I loved being in my kindergarten teacher’s classroom.  The title of my site is my three most important values when it comes to the environment in my classroom.  Check out the video below to find out more about how the title Learn, Laugh, Lead ties into my classroom philosophy.

“What are you passionate about?”

I have been asked this question many times in my life… in job interviews, meetings, when getting to know someone new.  For a long time, I would just shrug and respond with a simple, “I don’t know.”  I always thought that your passions had to be profound and outlandish.  I have come to realize that my passions have been right in front of my face this whole time.

I am passionate about the relationships in my life.

I am passionate about pushing myself to go outside my comfort zone.

I am passionate about laughter and having fun.

I am passionate about letting the people in my life know that I care about them.

Luckily for me, many of my personal passions overlap with my teaching passions.  However, there is one passion of mine that is the center of every aspect of my life.  Hover over the image below to take a peek.
